Class 8 Mathematics - Chapter 11: Mensuration (рдХреНрд╖реЗрддреНрд░рдорд┐рддрд┐)

Quick Revision Notes & Formula Sheet (MP Board)

1. Basic 2D Shapes (рджреНрд╡рд┐рд╡рд┐рдореАрдп рдЖрдХреГрддрд┐рдпрд╛рдБ)

Shape (рдЖрдХреГрддрд┐)Key TermsPerimeter (рдкрд░рд┐рдорд╛рдк)Area (рдХреНрд╖реЗрддреНрд░рдлрд▓)
Square (рд╡рд░реНрдЧ)Side = a4aa┬▓
Rectangle (рдЖрдпрдд)Length = l, Breadth = b2(l + b)l ├Ч b
Triangle (рддреНрд░рд┐рднреБрдЬ)Base = b, Height = hSum of all 3 sides┬╜ ├Ч b ├Ч h
Parallelogram (рд╕рдорд╛рдВрддрд░ рдЪрддреБрд░реНрднреБрдЬ)Base = b, Height = h2(a + b)b ├Ч h
Circle (рд╡реГрддреНрдд)Radius = r2 ├Ч ╧А ├Ч r (Circumference)╧А ├Ч r┬▓

Note: Value of ╧А (Pi) is approximately 22/7 or 3.14.

2. Area of Special Quadrilaterals (рд╡рд┐рд╢реЗрд╖ рдЪрддреБрд░реНрднреБрдЬ)

A. Trapezium (рд╕рдорд▓рдВрдм рдЪрддреБрд░реНрднреБрдЬ)

A quadrilateral with one pair of parallel sides.

  • Formula: Area = ┬╜ ├Ч (Sum of parallel sides) ├Ч (Distance between them)
  • Symbolic Form: Area = ┬╜ ├Ч (a + b) ├Ч h
    • where a and b are parallel sides, and h is the perpendicular height.

B. Rhombus (рд╕рдордЪрддреБрд░реНрднреБрдЬ)

A quadrilateral with all four sides equal and diagonals intersecting at 90┬░.

  • Formula 1 (using diagonals): Area = ┬╜ ├Ч dтВБ ├Ч dтВВ
    • where dтВБ and dтВВ are the lengths of the two diagonals.
  • Formula 2 (using base & height): Area = Base ├Ч Height

C. General Quadrilateral (рд╕рд╛рдорд╛рдиреНрдп рдЪрддреБрд░реНрднреБрдЬ)

Divided into two triangles by a diagonal.

  • Formula: Area = ┬╜ ├Ч d ├Ч (hтВБ + hтВВ)
    • where d is the diagonal, and hтВБ, hтВВ are perpendicular heights from opposite vertices to the diagonal.

3. Surface Area of 3D Shapes (3D рдЖрдХреГрддрд┐рдпреЛрдВ рдХрд╛ рдкреГрд╖реНрдареАy рдХреНрд╖реЗрддреНрд░рдлрд▓)

A. Cuboid (рдШрдирд╛рдн)

  • Length = l, Breadth = b, Height = h
  • Total Surface Area (TSA): 2(lb + bh + hl)
  • Lateral Surface Area (LSA) / Area of 4 Walls: 2h(l + b)

B. Cube (рдШрди)

  • Side (Edge) = a
  • Total Surface Area (TSA): 6a┬▓
  • Lateral Surface Area (LSA): 4a┬▓

C. Right Circular Cylinder (рдмреЗрд▓рди)

  • Radius = r, Height = h
  • Curved Surface Area (CSA): 2 ├Ч ╧А ├Ч r ├Ч h
  • Total Surface Area (TSA): 2 ├Ч ╧А ├Ч r ├Ч (r + h)

4. Volume of 3D Shapes (3D рдЖрдХреГрддрд┐рдпреЛрдВ рдХрд╛ рдЖрдпрддрди)

Volume refers to the space occupied by a 3D object.

  • Cuboid: Volume = Length ├Ч Breadth ├Ч Height = l ├Ч b ├Ч h
    • Alternatively: Volume = Area of Base ├Ч Height
  • Cube: Volume = Side ├Ч Side ├Ч Side = a┬│
  • Cylinder: Volume = ╧А ├Ч r┬▓ ├Ч h
    • Alternatively: Volume = Area of circular base ├Ч Height

5. Capacity vs. Volume (рдзрд╛рд░рд┐рддрд╛ рдПрд╡рдВ рдЖрдпрддрди)

  • Volume: Amount of space occupied by a 3D object.
  • Capacity: Quantity of liquid a hollow container can hold.

Important Unit Conversions:

  • 1 cm┬│ = 1 mL
  • 1000 cm┬│ = 1 Liter (L)
  • 1 m┬│ = 1,000,000 cm┬│ = 1000 Liters = 1 kiloliter (kL)

6. Quick Memory Tips for Exams

  1. Perimeter units are linear (e.g., cm, m).
  2. Area units are square units (e.g., cm┬▓, m┬▓).
  3. Volume units are cubic units (e.g., cm┬│, m┬│).
  4. Lateral Surface Area (LSA) excludes the top and bottom faces.
  5. Always convert all given dimensions to the same unit before applying formulas!
