Chapter: Fun with Magnets
1. Important Definitions (рдорд╣рддреНрд╡рдкреВрд░реНрдг рдкрд░рд┐рднрд╛рд╖рд╛рдПрдБ)
- Magnet (рдЪреБumbрдХ / рдЪреБрдВрдмрдХ): Any material that attracts objects made of iron, nickel, and cobalt is called a magnet.
- Magnetic Materials (рдЪреБрдВрдмрдХреАрдп рдкрджрд╛рд░реНрде): Materials that get attracted towards a magnet.
- Examples: Iron, Nickel, Cobalt (рд▓реЛрд╣рд╛, рдирд┐рдХрд┐рд▓, рдХреЛрдмрд╛рд▓реНрдЯ).
- Non-Magnetic Materials (рдЕрдЪреБрдВрдмрдХреАрдп рдкрджрд╛рд░реНрде): Materials that are not attracted towards a magnet.
- Examples: Plastic, Wood, Rubber, Glass, Paper (рдкреНрд▓рд╛рд╕реНрдЯрд┐рдХ, рд▓рдХрдбрд╝реА, рд░рдмрд░, рдХрд╛рдВрдЪ, рдХрд╛рдЧрдЬ).
- Poles of a Magnet (рдЪреБрдВрдмрдХ рдХреЗ рдзреНрд░реБрд╡): The two ends of a magnet where the magnetic force is strongest. Every magnet has two poles: North Pole (N) and South Pole (S).
- Compass (рджрд┐рд╕рд╕реВрдЪрдХ / рджрд┐рдХрд╕реВрдЪрдХ рдпрдВрддреНрд░): An instrument used for finding directions, which has a magnetized needle that always points towards the North-South direction.
2. Types of Magnets (рдЪреБрдВрдмрдХ рдХреЗ рдкреНрд░рдХрд╛рд░)
Magnets come in different shapes based on their utility:
- Bar Magnet (рдЫрдбрд╝ рдЪреБрдВрдмрдХ) - Rectangular or cylindrical bar.
- Horse-shoe Magnet (рдШреЛрдбрд╝реЗ рдХреА рдирд╛рд▓ рдЬреИрд╕рд╛ рдЪреБрдВрдмрдХ) - U-shaped magnet.
- Cylindrical Magnet (рдмреЗрд▓рдирд╛рдХрд╛рд░ рдЪреБрдВрдмрдХ) - Cylinder-shaped.
- Ball-ended Magnet (рдЧреЛрд▓рд╛рдХрд╛рд░ рд╕рд┐рд░реЗ рд╡рд╛рд▓рд╛ рдЪреБрдВрдмрдХ) - Dumbbell shaped.
- Disc Magnet (рдбрд┐рд╕реНрдХ рдЪреБрдВрдмрдХ) - Circular flat shape.
3. Key Properties of Magnets (рдЪреБрдВрдмрдХ рдХреЗ рдореБрдЦреНрдп рдЧреБрдг)
- Two Poles Always Exist: Magnetic poles always exist in pairs. If you cut a bar magnet into two pieces, each piece will still have a North pole and a South pole. You cannot isolate a single pole (Monopoles do not exist).
- Directional Property: A freely suspended bar magnet always aligns itself in the North-South direction.
- North-seeking end $\rightarrow$ North Pole.
- South-seeking end $\rightarrow$ South Pole.
- Attractive Property: Magnets attract magnetic materials like iron.
- Repulsive Property:
- Like poles repel each other (North-North or South-South).
- Unlike poles attract each other (North-South).

5. Methods of Making a Magnet (рдЪреБрдВрдмрдХ рдмрдирд╛рдиреЗ рдХреА рд╡рд┐рдзрд┐)
- Single Touch Method (рдПрдХрд▓ рд╕реНрдкрд░реНрд╢ рд╡рд┐рдзрд┐): Take an iron piece, place a bar magnet at one end, and stroke it along the length of the iron piece in the same direction repeatedly without lifting the magnet. After 30-40 times, the iron piece becomes a magnet.
6. How to Store Magnets Properly (рдЪреБрдВрдмрдХ рдХрд╛ рд░рдЦ-рд░рдЦрд╛рд╡)
To keep magnets strong for a long time, follow these safety measures:
- Bar Magnets: Store them in pairs with their unlike poles on the same side.
- Keep Separated: Place a piece of wood between them and put soft iron pieces (keepers) across their ends.
- Keep Away From: Electronics, computers, mobile phones, television sets, CDs, and cassettes, as magnets can ruin them.
- Avoid Damage: Do not heat, hammer, or drop magnets from a height, as they lose their magnetic properties.
