Chapter 7: Conservation of Plants and Animals

  • Deforestation

    • Causes
      • Agricultural land expansion
      • Building houses and factories
      • Making furniture and using wood as fuel
      • Natural causes (forest fires, severe droughts)
    • Consequences
      • Increased temperature and pollution levels
      • Decrease in groundwater level
      • Disturbed water cycle
      • Desertification (fertile land converting to deserts)
      • Loss of biodiversity and natural habitats
  • Biosphere Reserves & Protected Areas

    • Definitions
      • Protected areas for conservation of biodiversity
      • Maintain traditional lifestyle of tribals living in area
    • Types of Protected Areas
      • Wildlife Sanctuary: Areas where animals are protected from any disturbance to them and their habitat
      • National Park: Areas reserved for wild life where they can freely use the habitats and natural resources
      • Biosphere Reserve: Large areas of protected land for conservation of wildlife, plant and animal resources, and traditional life of the tribals
  • Flora and Fauna

    • Flora: All the plant life occurring in a particular region
    • Fauna: All the animal life occurring in a particular region
    • Endemic Species
      • Species of plants and animals found exclusively in a particular area
      • Examples: Sal and Wild mango (Flora); Bison, Indian giant squirrel, and Flying squirrel (Fauna)
  • Threatened Species

    • Endangered Species
      • Species facing the danger of extinction
      • Examples: Blue-bull, barking deer, elephant, golden cat, pink-headed duck
      • Red Data Book: Source book which keeps a record of all endangered animals and plants
    • Extinct Species
      • Species that no longer exist anywhere on Earth
      • Example: Dinosaur
  • Conservation Measures

    • Wildlife Conservation
      • Strict laws against poaching and hunting
      • Banning capture and killing of animals
    • Forest Conservation
      • Reforestation: Restocking of destroyed forests by planting new trees
      • Afforestation: Planting trees where no forest existed earlier
      • Recycling of paper (saves trees, energy, and water)
    • Government Initiatives in India
      • Forest (Conservation) Act
      • Project Tiger (to protect tigers and maintain population)
