1. Introduction (рдкрд░рд┐рдЪрдп)
Everything in our surroundings undergoes changes. These changes are broadly classified into two main types based on whether new substances are formed or not.
2. Physical Changes (рднреМрддрд┐рдХ рдкрд░рд┐рд╡рд░реНрддрди)
A change in which a substance undergoes a change in its physical properties (like shape, size, color, or state) is called a physical change.
- Key Characteristics (рдореБрдЦреНрдп рд╡рд┐рд╢реЗрд╖рддрд╛рдПрдБ):
- No new substance is formed (рдХреЛрдИ рдирдпрд╛ рдкрджрд╛рд░реНрде рдирд╣реАрдВ рдмрдирддрд╛).
- It is generally reversible (рдпрд╣ рд╕рд╛рдорд╛рдиреНрдпрддрдГ рдЙрддреНрдХреНрд░рдордгреАрдп рд╣реЛрддрд╛ рд╣реИ).
- Very little or no energy (heat/light) is absorbed or released.
- Examples (рдЙрджрд╛рд╣рд░рдг):
- Melting of ice (рдмрд░реНрдл рдХрд╛ рдкрд┐рдШрд▓рдирд╛).
- Dissolving sugar in water (рдкрд╛рдиреА рдореЗрдВ рдЪреАрдиреА рдШреЛрд▓рдирд╛).

3. Chemical Changes (рд░рд╛рд╕рд╛рдпрдирд┐рдХ рдкрд░рд┐рд╡рд░реНрддрди)
A change in which one or more new substances are formed is called a chemical change. It is also known as a chemical reaction.
- Key Characteristics (рдореБрдЦреНрдп рд╡рд┐рд╢реЗрд╖рддрд╛рдПрдБ):
- New substances with entirely different properties are formed (рдирдП рдкрджрд╛рд░реНрдереЛрдВ рдХрд╛ рдирд┐рд░реНрдорд╛рдг рд╣реЛрддрд╛ рд╣реИ).
- It is generally irreversible (рдпрд╣ рд╕рд╛рдорд╛рдиреНрдпрддрдГ рдЕрдиреБрддреНрдХреНрд░рдордгреАрдп рд╣реЛрддрд╛ рд╣реИ).
- Heat, light, or sound may be produced or absorbed (рдКрд╖реНрдорд╛, рдкреНрд░рдХрд╛рд╢ рдпрд╛ рдзреНрд╡рдирд┐ рдЙрддреНрдкрдиреНрди рдпрд╛ рдЕрд╡рд╢реЛрд╖рд┐рдд рд╣реЛ рд╕рдХрддреА рд╣реИ).
- Change in smell or color may take place (рдЧрдВрдЧ рдпрд╛ рд░рдВрдЧ рдореЗрдВ рдкрд░рд┐рд╡рд░реНрддрди рд╣реЛ рд╕рдХрддрд╛ рд╣реИ).
- A gas may be evolved (рдЧреИрд╕ рдирд┐рдХрд▓ рд╕рдХрддреА рд╣реИ).

4. Important Chemical Reactions in the Chapter (рдорд╣рддреНрд╡рдкреВрд░реНрдг рд░рд╛рд╕рд╛рдпрдирд┐рдХ рдЕрднрд┐рдХреНрд░рд┐рдпрд╛рдПрдБ)
A. Rusting of Iron (рд▓реЛрд╣реЗ рдореЗрдВ рдЬрдВрдЧ рд▓рдЧрдирд╛)
When iron is exposed to oxygen and moisture (water vapor) in the air, a new brown substance called rust forms on its surface.

Iron (рд▓реЛрд╣рд╛) + Oxygen (рдСрдХреНрд╕реАр╣Ар╕Ир╕Щ, O2) + Water (рдЬрд▓, H2O) -> Rust [Iron oxide] (рдЬрдВрдЧ / рдЖрдпрд░рди рдСрдХреНрд╕рд╛рдЗрдб) - Condition for Rusting: Presence of both Oxygen and Water (or moisture).
B. Reaction of Baking Soda and Vinegar (рдмреЗрдХрд┐рдВрдЧ рд╕реЛрдбрд╛ рдФрд░ рд╕рд┐рд░рдХреЗ рдХреА рдЕрднрд┐рдХреНрд░рд┐рдпрд╛)
When baking soda (sodium hydrogen carbonate) is mixed with vinegar (acetic acid), carbon dioxide gas is released with a fizzing sound, along with other substances.

5. Methods to Prevent Rusting (рдЬрдВрдЧ рд╕реЗ рдмрдЪрд╛рдиреЗ рдХреЗ рдЙрдкрд╛рдп)
Rusting destroys iron objects. To prevent it, we need to cut off the contact of iron with oxygen and moisture.
- Painting or Greasing (рдкреЗрдВрдЯ рдХрд░рдирд╛ рдпрд╛ рдЧреНрд░реАрд╕ рд▓рдЧрд╛рдирд╛): Applying a coat of paint or grease regularly.
- Galvanization (рдп╫б╫Ш╫ЩрдХрд░рдг / рдЧреИрд▓реНрд╡реЗрдиреАрдХрд░рдг): Depositing a layer of a metal like zinc or chromium on iron. (Note: Stainless steel is made by mixing iron with carbon, chromium, nickel, and manganese, which does not rust).
6. Crystallization (рдХреНрд░рд┐рд╕реНрдЯрд▓реАрдХрд░рдг / рд░рд╡реЗрджрд╛рд░ рдмрдирд╛рдирд╛)
The process of obtaining large, pure crystals of a substance from its saturated solution is called crystallization.
- It is an example of a physical change because no new substance is formed; only the pure form of the substance separates out in crystal form.
- Example: Obtaining pure crystals of Copper Sulphate (рдиреАрд▓рд╛ рдереЛрдерд╛) from its hot solution.
