The four major fiber crops grown in India are cotton, jute, hemp, and natural silk. Out of these, cotton, jute, and hemp are derived from the crops grown in the soil, whereas silk is obtained from the cocoons of the silkworms fed on green leaves, particularly mulberry. Rearing of silkworms for the production of silk fiber is known as sericulture. Cotton is considered the primary raw material for the cotton textile industry, while jute is known as the golden fiber used for making gunny bags, mats, ropes, yarn, carpets, and other artifacts. Both cotton and jute play a significant role in the Indian agricultural economy and industrial sector.
