Persistence of Caste System in Contemporary India

\nDespite significant socio-economic changes, urbanization, economic growth, and constitutional measures, the caste system has not disappeared from contemporary India. Some aspects of caste have persisted:

• Endogamy and Marriages: Most people still marry within their own caste or tribe, and inter-caste marriages remain relatively low.

• Untouchability: Although legally abolished, untouchability has not ended completely and continues to exist in various covert and overt forms in rural and urban areas.

• Economic Hierarchy: Caste groups that had access to education and economic resources historically continue to do well, while those who were groups placed at the bottom of the caste hierarchy remain marginalized.

Expression of Caste in Politics

\nCaste plays a vital role in Indian politics in multiple ways:

• Candidate Selection: Political parties choose candidates from different castes and communities to muster necessary support to win elections.

• Voter Mobilization: During elections, parties and candidates make appeals to caste sentiments to mobilize voters and secure block votes.

• Universal Adult Franchise and One-Person-One-Vote: This democratic mechanism has made political leaders aware of the political importance of backward and Dalit castes, leading to increased political representation and empowerment of these groups.

Is Caste the Only Determining Factor?

\nNo, caste is not the sole determining factor in Indian elections. Politics is influenced by multiple other dynamics:

• Economic Issues: Development, inflation, unemployment, and poverty are critical issues that sway voter decisions.

• Party Performance and Leadership: The popularity of political leaders, past governance record, and organizational strength of parties matter immensely.

• Class and Gender Dynamics: Voters often cross caste boundaries to vote based on economic class interests or gender-specific policies. \nThus, while caste influences politics, politics also influences caste by giving marginalized groups a voice and political agency.
