Ozone is a molecule formed by three atoms of oxygen and has the chemical formula O3. At the higher levels of the atmosphere, ultraviolet (UV) radiations split apart molecular oxygen (O2) into free oxygen atoms. These individual oxygen atoms then combine with molecular oxygen to form ozone molecules. Although poisonous at ground level, ozone forms a protective shield high up in the stratosphere.
