Catenation is the unique ability of an element to form bonds with atoms of the same element to form long chains, branched chains, or ring structures. Carbon exhibits catenation to a maximum extent compared to any other element because of the small size of the carbon atom and the strong carbon-carbon covalent bond strength. This property allows carbon to form an enormous number of organic compounds, including straight chains, branched chains, and closed rings, which form the fundamental basis of organic chemistry and all life on Earth.
