When the narrator decided to fly straight into the massive storm clouds, he was immediately engulfed in complete darkness. Inside the clouds, everything suddenly became black, and it was impossible to see anything outside the aeroplane. The old Dakota aeroplane began to jump and twist violently in the turbulent air. When he looked at the compass, he was shocked to see it spinning round and round; it was completely dead. Other instruments, including the radio, also stopped working, leaving him with no means of communication with Paris Control. He was lost in the storm and running out of fuel. This terrifying situation created a sense of absolute helplessness and panic until a mysterious black aeroplane suddenly appeared next to him, whose pilot guided him safely through the storm to land on the runway.
