Chapter: India - Size and Location
1. Introduction & Latitudinal/Longitudinal Extent
India is one of the ancient civilizations in the world. It has achieved multi-faceted socio-economic progress during the last five decades.
- Hemisphere: India is entirely located in the Northern and Eastern hemispheres.
- Mainland Latitudinal Extent:
8°4'Nto37°6'N - Mainland Longitudinal Extent:
68°7'Eto97°25'E - Tropic of Cancer: The
23°30'Nlatitude divides the country into almost two equal parts.
2. Size of India
- Total Area: India's total area accounts for about 2.4% of the total geographical area of the world.
- Rank: India is the 7th largest country in the world by area.
- Land Boundary: Approximately 15,200 km
- Total Coastline: (including Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep) 7,516.6 km
Top 7 Largest Countries in the World (by Area):
- Russia
- Canada
- USA
- China
- Brazil
- Australia
- India
3. Neighbors and Boundaries
India has a strategic position in South Asia and shares its land boundaries with 6 countries:
- North-West: Pakistan and Afghanistan
- North: China (Tibet), Nepal, and Bhutan
- East: Myanmar and Bangladesh
Island Neighbors (across the sea):
- Sri Lanka: Separated by the Palk Strait and Gulf of Mannar.
- Maldives: Located to the south of the Lakshadweep Islands.
4. Important Concepts & Calculations
A. The Latitudinal and Longitudinal Extent Difference
- Both the latitudinal and longitudinal extent of India is roughly 30°.
- Formula/Fact:
37°6'N - 8°4'N ≈ 30°and97°25'E - 68°7'E ≈ 30°.
B. Time Lag (Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh)
- The Problem: Due to a longitudinal gap of nearly 30°, there is a time lag of 2 hours between Arunachal Pradesh (east) and Gujarat (west).
- Standard Meridian: To avoid local time confusion, the Standard Meridian of India (
82°30'E) passing through Mirzapur (in Uttar Pradesh) is taken as the standard time for the whole country. - Calculation:
- Earth rotates 360° in 24 hours (15° per hour, or 1° in 4 minutes).
30° × 4 minutes = 120 minutes= 2 hours.
5. Geographical Significance of India's Location
- Central Location: India lies at the head of the Indian Ocean, acting as a central bridge between East and West Asia.
- Trans-Indian Ocean Routes: The trans-Indian ocean routes which connect the countries of Europe in the West and the countries of East Asia provide a strategic central location to India.
- The Deccan Peninsula: Juts out into the Indian Ocean, helping India establish close contact with West Asia, Africa, and Europe from the western coast, and Southeast and East Asia from the eastern coast.
6. Important Dates & Trivia
- Suez Canal (1869): Opening of the Suez Canal reduced India's distance from Europe by 7,000 km.
- Southernmost Point: Indira Point got submerged under the sea water in 2004 during the Tsunami.
