1. Key Definitions & Concepts
-
Diversity (विविधता):
- English: Differences among people based on language, religion, food habits, clothing, festivals, traditions, and economic background.
- Hindi: लोगों के बीच भाषा, धर्म, खान-पान, पहनावा, त्योहारों, परंपराओं और आर्थिक पृष्ठभूमि के आधार पर पाए जाने वाले अंतर।
- Core Idea: Diversity means recognizing that everyone is unique and respecting those differences.
-
Inequality (असमानता):
- English: Differences that exist when some people do not have access to basic resources, opportunities, or wealth compared to others (e.g., caste system, rich vs. poor).
- Hindi: जब कुछ लोगों के पास दूसरों की तुलना में बुनियादी संसाधनों, अवसरों या धन की कमी होती है (जैसे- जाति व्यवस्था, अमीर बनाम गरीब)।
-
Interdependence (परस्पर निर्भरता):
- English: Relying on each other for different needs, skills, and services in a society.
- Hindi: समाज में विभिन्न आवश्यकताओं, कौशलों और सेवाओं के लिए एक-दूसरे पर निर्भर रहना।
2. What Makes India Diverse? (भारत में विविधता के आधार)
Diversity in India is visible through various cultural and geographical factors:
- Languages (भाषाएँ):
- People speak hundreds of different languages (e.g., Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu) and write in different scripts.
- Religions (धर्म):
- Major religions of the world (Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism) are practiced in India.
- Festivals (त्यौहार):
- Celebrations like Diwali, Eid, Christmas, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Pongal, Onam, Bihu, and Baisakhi reflect diverse cultural roots.
- Clothing & Food (पहनावा और खान-पान):
- Different regions have unique traditional dresses (saree, kurta, mundu) and staple foods (rice, wheat, millets) based on local climate and agriculture.
3. Geographical & Historical Factors Influencing Diversity (विविधता को प्रभावित करने वाले भौगोलिक और ऐतिहासिक कारक)
Diversity is often shaped by where people live and their history:
- Geographical Influence (भौगोलिक प्रभाव):
- Mountains vs. Sea: People living near the sea (like in Kerala) eat more fish and rice, while people living in desert or mountainous regions (like Ladakh) rear sheep/goats and eat meat/dairy products.
- Climate: Determines clothing, housing, and agricultural practices.
- Historical Influence (ऐतिहासिक प्रभाव):
- Travel and Migration: People travelled in search of new lands, trade, or work, leading to a mixing of cultures (cultural blend).
- Example - Ladakh: Influenced by Tibetan culture and Buddhism (often called "Little Tibet").
- Example - Kerala: Influenced by Arab, Chinese, Jewish, Portuguese, and British traders due to its spice trade and coastal location.
4. Unity in Diversity (अनेकता में एकता)
- Concept: Coined by India’s first Prime Minister, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, in his book The Discovery of India.
- Meaning: Despite having diverse cultures, languages, and religions, Indians stand united as one nation.
- Symbols of Unity:
- The Indian National Anthem (Jana Gana Mana).
- The Indian National Flag (Tiranga).
- The freedom struggle against British rule, where people from all backgrounds fought together.
5. Quick Review Points for Exams
- Ladakh is a desert in the mountains of Jammu & Kashmir (now a Union Territory) famous for producing Pashmina wool.
- Kerala is located in the southwest corner of India, surrounded by the sea on one side and hills on the other, famous for spices like pepper, cloves, and cardamom.
- Diversity adds variety and richness to our lives rather than division.
