1. Important Definitions (महत्वपूर्ण परिभाषाएँ)

  • Magnet (चुumbक / चुंबक): Any material that attracts objects made of iron, nickel, and cobalt is called a magnet.
  • Magnetic Materials (चुंबकीय पदार्थ): Materials that get attracted towards a magnet.
    • Examples: Iron, Nickel, Cobalt (लोहा, निकिल, कोबाल्ट).
  • Non-Magnetic Materials (अचुंबकीय पदार्थ): Materials that are not attracted towards a magnet.
    • Examples: Plastic, Wood, Rubber, Glass, Paper (प्लास्टिक, लकड़ी, रबर, कांच, कागज).
  • Poles of a Magnet (चुंबक के ध्रुव): The two ends of a magnet where the magnetic force is strongest. Every magnet has two poles: North Pole (N) and South Pole (S).
  • Compass (दिससूचक / दिकसूचक यंत्र): An instrument used for finding directions, which has a magnetized needle that always points towards the North-South direction.

2. Types of Magnets (चुंबक के प्रकार)

Magnets come in different shapes based on their utility:

  1. Bar Magnet (छड़ चुंबक) - Rectangular or cylindrical bar.
  2. Horse-shoe Magnet (घोड़े की नाल जैसा चुंबक) - U-shaped magnet.
  3. Cylindrical Magnet (बेलनाकार चुंबक) - Cylinder-shaped.
  4. Ball-ended Magnet (गोलाकार सिरे वाला चुंबक) - Dumbbell shaped.
  5. Disc Magnet (डिस्क चुंबक) - Circular flat shape.

3. Key Properties of Magnets (चुंबक के मुख्य गुण)

  • Two Poles Always Exist: Magnetic poles always exist in pairs. If you cut a bar magnet into two pieces, each piece will still have a North pole and a South pole. You cannot isolate a single pole (Monopoles do not exist).
  • Directional Property: A freely suspended bar magnet always aligns itself in the North-South direction.
    • North-seeking end $\rightarrow$ North Pole.
    • South-seeking end $\rightarrow$ South Pole.
  • Attractive Property: Magnets attract magnetic materials like iron.
  • Repulsive Property:
    • Like poles repel each other (North-North or South-South).
    • Unlike poles attract each other (North-South).

4. Important Rules & Laws (महत्वपूर्ण नियम)

  • Attraction and Repulsion Rule:
    • $N \text{ and } N \rightarrow$ Repulsion (प्रतिकर्षित करते हैं)
    • $S \text{ and } S \rightarrow$ Repulsion (प्रतिकर्षित करते हैं)
    • $N \text{ and } S \rightarrow$ Attraction (आकर्षित करते हैं)

5. Methods of Making a Magnet (चुंबक बनाने की विधि)

  • Single Touch Method (एकल स्पर्श विधि): Take an iron piece, place a bar magnet at one end, and stroke it along the length of the iron piece in the same direction repeatedly without lifting the magnet. After 30-40 times, the iron piece becomes a magnet.

6. How to Store Magnets Properly (चुंबक का रख-रखाव)

To keep magnets strong for a long time, follow these safety measures:

  • Bar Magnets: Store them in pairs with their unlike poles on the same side.
  • Keep Separated: Place a piece of wood between them and put soft iron pieces (keepers) across their ends.
  • Keep Away From: Electronics, computers, mobile phones, television sets, CDs, and cassettes, as magnets can ruin them.
  • Avoid Damage: Do not heat, hammer, or drop magnets from a height, as they lose their magnetic properties.
