Chapter: Electricity and Circuits


### Concept 1: What is Electricity?

  • Electricity: A form of energy that provides power to run various appliances like bulbs, fans, and heaters.
  • Electric Current: The flow of electricity through a conductor.
  • Source of Electricity: Devices that produce electricity. Common sources include:
    • Electric Cell (Dry Cell): Converts chemical energy into electrical energy. It has two terminals: a positive (+) terminal (metal cap) and a negative (-) terminal (metal disc).

### Concept 2: Electric Bulb

  • Electric Bulb: A device that glows when an electric current passes through it.
  • Key Parts of a Bulb:
    • Filament: A thin wire inside the bulb that glows and emits light when current passes through it. It is made of Tungsten.
    • Terminals: Two thick wires at the base of the bulb connected to the filament. One is connected to the metal case at the base, and the other to the metal tip at the center of the base.

### Concept 3: Electric Circuit

  • Electric Circuit: A complete, closed path through which electric current can flow from one terminal of the electric cell, through the bulb, and back to the other terminal.
  • Components of a Simple Circuit:
    1. Electric Cell: Provides the energy/voltage.
    2. Connecting Wires: Made of metal (usually copper) to carry the current.
    3. Electric Bulb/Load: The device that uses electricity.
    4. Switch (Key): A simple device that either breaks or completes the circuit.

### Concept 4: Switch

  • Switch: An ON/OFF device used to make or break an electric circuit.
  • Closed Switch (ON): The path is complete; current flows, and the appliance works.
  • Open Switch (OFF): The path is broken; current stops flowing, and the appliance turns off.

### Concept 5: Conductors and Insulators

  • Conductors (चालक): Materials that allow electric current to pass through them easily.
    • Examples: Metals (Copper, Iron, Aluminum), Graphite, Tap water, Human body.
  • Insulators / Poor Conductors (विद्युत रोधी): Materials that do not allow electric current to pass through them.
    • Examples: Plastic, Wood, Rubber, Glass, Air, Pure/Distilled water.

### Key Points to Remember

  1. Electricity always flows from the positive terminal (+) to the negative terminal (-) of a cell in an external circuit.
  2. A bulb fuses when its filament breaks, stopping the flow of current.
  3. Electric wires are covered with plastic or rubber (insulators) to protect us from electric shocks, as plastic is a poor conductor of electricity.
  4. Caution: Never touch household electrical switches or sockets with wet hands or connect the two terminals of a cell directly without a bulb or appliance.
