Chapter: The Origin and Evolution of the Earth


### 1. Introduction to the Universe

  • Universe: Vast expanse of space containing all matter and energy that exists. It includes billions of galaxies, stars, planets, and other celestial bodies.
  • Galaxy: A huge system of billions of stars, dust, and gases held together by gravity. Our solar system is part of the Milky Way Galaxy ( आकाशगंगा).
  • Light Year: A unit of astronomical distance, not time. It is the distance that light travels in one year in a vacuum.
    • Speed of light = $3 \times 10^8$ km/s.
    • 1 Light Year $\approx 9.46 \times 10^{12}$ km.

### 2. Origin of the Earth & Universe

Several theories have been proposed to explain the origin of the universe and the earth. They are broadly divided into Early Theories and Modern Theories.

A. Early Theories

  • Nebular Hypothesis (नेबुलर परिकल्पना):
    • Proposed by Immanuel Kant and revised by Marquis de Laplace (1796).
    • Concept: The sun and planets were formed from a slowly rotating cloud of hot gas called a nebula. Over time, cooling caused contraction and centrifugal force led to the separation of rings of material that formed the planets.
  • Binary Theories (द्वैतवादी सिद्धांत):
    • Concept: Suggested that the sun's companion star approached it, causing gravitational pull that drew out cigar-shaped material from the sun, which later condensed into planets. (Proponents: Chamberlain, Moulton, Sir James Jeans, Harold Jeffreys).

B. Modern Theory

  • Big Bang Theory (बिग बैंग सिद्धांत) / Expanding Universe Hypothesis:
    • Proposed by Edwin Hubble (1920).
    • Concept:
      1. All matter in the universe existed in one place as a "tiny ball" (singular atom) with an unimaginably small volume, infinite temperature, and infinite density.
      2. Around 13.8 billion years ago, a massive explosion (Big Bang) occurred, leading to rapid expansion that continues to this day.
      3. Within the first few fractions of a second, the universe expanded, followed by the formation of atoms, galaxies, and stars.

### 3. Formation of Planets

The planets are believed to have developed through the following stages:

  1. Stage 1 (Nebula Formation): The stars are localized lumps of gas within a nebula. Gravitational force within the lumps leads to the formation of a core.
  2. Stage 2 (Planetesimals): The gas cloud starts condensing, and the matter around the core develops into small-rounded objects through the process of cohesion. These small objects are called planetesimals.
  3. Stage 3 (Planet Formation): Smaller planetesimals accrete (join together) to form fewer large bodies called planets.

### 4. Our Solar System

  • Consists of the Sun (the star), 8 planets, dwarf planets, dozens of moons, millions of asteroids, comets, and meteoroids.
  • Terrestrial Planets (आंतरिक / पार्थिव ग्रह): Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.
    • Characteristics: Rocky, dense, close to the Sun, formed near the parent star where extreme winds blew away lighter gases.
  • Jovian / Gas Giant Planets (बाह्य / जोवियन ग्रह): Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
    • Characteristics: Gaseous, large size, low density, distant from the Sun, retained huge amounts of hydrogen and helium.

### 5. Evolution of the Earth

The Earth was initially a barren, rocky, and hot object with a thin atmosphere of hydrogen and helium. Its present structure has evolved through three main stages:

A. Evolution of Lithosphere (Layering / Differentiation)

  • Due to high temperature during the earth's formation, the planet partially melted.
  • Heavier materials (like iron and nickel) sank to the center (core), while lighter ones rose to the surface and cooled to form the crust and mantle (differentiation / विभेदन).
  • This process led to the formation of distinct layers: Crust, Mantle, Outer Core, and Inner Core.

B. Evolution of Atmosphere and Hydrosphere (Atmosphere of the Earth)

  • Stage 1: Stripping of the early primordial atmosphere (Hydrogen and Helium) due to solar winds.
  • Stage 2: Outgassing (गैसों का निष्कासन): Gases (Water vapor, Nitrogen, Carbon dioxide, Methane, Ammonia) were released from the interior of the hot molten earth through volcanic eruptions.
  • Stage 3 (Modification):
    • Water vapor condensed to fall as rain, filling depressions and forming the oceans (approx. 4 billion years ago).
    • Carbon dioxide dissolved in rainwater, reducing its atmospheric concentration.
    • Photosynthesis by blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) around 2.5–3 billion years ago added Oxygen ($O_2$) to the atmosphere, eventually making it oxygen-rich.

### 6. Origin of Life (जीवन की उत्पत्ति)

  • Began as a chemical reaction that generated complex organic molecules (approx. 1 billion years after earth's formation, i.e., ~3.8 billion years ago).
  • First form of life was microscopic single-celled organisms (bacteria-like).
  • Gradually evolved into complex multicellular flora and fauna.
