Chapter: Landforms and their Evolution (भू-आकृतियाँ तथा उनका विकास)
Introduction
- Geomorphic Agent (भू-आकृतिक कारक): Mobile mediums like running water, groundwater, glaciers, wind, and waves that remove, transport, and deposit earth materials.
- Geomorphic Process (भू-आकृतिक प्रक्रम): Endogenic (internal) and Exogenic (external) forces that cause physical and chemical changes on the earth's surface.
- Evolution (विकास): The historical development of a landform through different stages (Youth, Mature, Old).
1. Running Water (Ablation / Fluvial Landforms)
Running water is the most dominant geomorphic agent in shaping the earth's surface, especially in humid regions.

Stages of River:
- Youth: Steep slopes, V-shaped valleys, gorges, canyons, waterfalls, rapid flow.
- Mature: Gentle slopes, wider valleys, meanders, reduction in velocity.
- Old: Flat plains, extensive floodplains, oxbow lakes, deltas, braided channels.

Erosional Landforms:
- Valleys: Starts as narrow V-shaped valleys, deepening into gorges and canyons.
- Potholes: Circular depressions formed by the abrasive action of pebbles swirling in the river current.
- Plunge Pools: Deep pools formed at the base of waterfalls due to the impact of falling water.
- River Terraces: Step-like benches formed due to vertical erosion by a rejuvenated river.
- Meanders: Loop-like channel patterns developed on gentle slopes.

Depositional Landforms:
- Alluvial Fans: Cone-shaped deposits formed when a stream exits a mountain valley onto a flat plain.
- Delta: Triangular deposits of sediment formed at the mouth of a river where it enters a standing body of water.
- Floodplains: Low-lying flat areas bordering a river, formed by repeated deposition of silt during floods.
- Natural Levees: Ridge-like deposits of coarse material along the banks of rivers formed during floods.
- Oxbow Lakes: Cut-off meanders forming crescent-shaped lakes.
2. Groundwater (Karst Topography)
Water moving through the underground rock strata (especially limestone or dolomite areas) creates Karst topography through chemical processes (solution and precipitation).

Erosional Landforms:
- Sinkholes: Small to medium-sized circular or funnel-shaped depressions formed by solution.
- Dolines: Collapse sinkholes formed by the sinking of land above a cavern.
- Lapsies: Irregular grooves and ridges formed when limestone is exposed to continuous solution.
- Caves/Caverns: Underground voids of varying sizes formed by solution along joints and bedding planes.

Depositional Landforms (Speleothems):
- Stalactites: Icicle-like calcium carbonate structures hanging from the cave ceiling.
- Stalagmites: Pillar-like calcium carbonate deposits rising upward from the cave floor.
- Pillars / Columns: Formed when stalactites and stalagmites merge together.
3. Glaciers (Glacial Landforms)
Masses of ice moving down a valley under the influence of gravity. Most active in high-latitude or high-altitude regions.

Erosional Landforms:
- Cirque (Corrie / Cirque): Deep, steep-sided, amphitheatre-like hollows carved by glaciers at the head of a valley.
- Horns: Steep-sided, sharp-pointed peaks formed when three or more cirques headcut backward.
- Aretes: Knife-edge ridges separating two adjacent glacial valleys.
- Glacial Valleys / U-Shaped Valleys: Steep-sided and flat-bottomed valleys carved out by moving glaciers.
- Hanging Valleys: Tributary glacial valleys that join the main glacial valley at a high elevation, often forming waterfalls.
- Fjords: Deep, steep-sided glacial valleys flooded by the sea.

Depositional Landforms:
- Moraines: Ridges of unsorted glacial debris (till). Types include Lateral, Medial, Terminal, and Ground moraines.
- Eskers: Winding ridges of sand and gravel deposited by streams flowing within or under melting glaciers.
- Drumlins: Oval-shaped hills composed of glacial drift, aligned parallel to the direction of ice movement.
- Outwash Plains: Plains formed by the melting water streams depositing sediments beyond the terminal moraine.
4. Waves and Currents (Coastal Landforms)
Coastal processes are driven by the energy of waves, tides, and currents crashing against the shoreline.

Erosional Landforms:
- Cliffs: Steep rock faces formed by wave action undercutting the coastline.
- Wave-Cut Platforms: Flat surfaces at the base of sea cliffs formed by wave erosion.
- Sea Caves: Hollows carved into the cliff base by hydraulic action of waves.
- Sea Arches: Arches formed when caves from opposite sides of a headland break through.
- Sea Stacks: Isolated pillars of rock remaining when the top of a sea arch collapses.

Depositional Landforms:
- Beaches: Deposits of sand, gravel, or pebbles along the shoreline.
- Spits: Narrow ridges of sand or shingle attached to the land at one end and terminating in open water at the other.
- Bars: Ridge-like deposits extending entirely or partially across the mouth of a bay.
- Tombolos: Sand bars that connect the mainland to an offshore island.
5. Winds (Aeolian Landforms)
Wind is the most effective erosional and depositional agent in arid and semi-arid (desert) regions due to the lack of vegetation.

Erosional Landforms:
- Pediplains: Broad, relatively flat rock-surfaces formed by the coalescence of pediments.
- Deflation Hollows: Depressions formed by the removal of loose particles by wind.
- Ventifacts: Rock fragments shaped, faceted, or polished by wind-blown sand abrasion.
- Yardangs: Ridge and furrow landscape carved out by wind abrasion on alternating hard and soft rock layers.
- Mushroom Rocks: Rock pillars carved into mushroom-like shapes where maximum erosion occurs near the base due to sand abrasion.

Depositional Landforms:
- Sand Dunes: Mounds or ridges of sand piled up by the wind.
- Barchans: Crescent-shaped dunes with horns pointing downwind.
- Seif: Longitudinal dunes parallel to the wind direction.
- Parabolic dunes: U-shaped dunes with horns pointing upwind, stabilized by vegetation.
- Transverse dunes: Dunes formed perpendicular to the wind direction.
- Loess: Fine, silty, wind-blown dust deposited over vast areas outside deserts (e.g., Loess Plateau in China).
- Sand Dunes: Mounds or ridges of sand piled up by the wind.
