Class: 11th Geography

Chapter: India — Location (भारत - स्थिति)

1. Introduction & Strategic Position

  • Geographical Identity: India is one of the ancient civilizations of the world. It has achieved multi-faceted socio-economic progress during the last five independent decades.
  • Hemispheric Location: Entirely located in the Northern and Eastern hemispheres.
  • Shape: The mainland stretches within the tropics, while the southern part lies in the sub-tropical zone/warm temperate zone.

2. Latitudinal and Longitudinal Extent

  • Latitudinal Extent (अक्षांशीय विस्तार):
    • Mainland: 8°4'N to 37°6'N
    • Including Andaman & Nicobar Islands (Southernmost point): 6°45'N
  • Longitudinal Extent (देशांतरीय विस्तार):
    • 68°7'E to 97°25'E
  • Total Extent: Both latitudinal and longitudinal extents are roughly 30°.

Key Impacts of Extent:

  • Time Difference: Due to the 30° longitudinal difference, there is a time lag of 2 hours between the westernmost point (Gujarat) and the easternmost point (Arunachal Pradesh).
  • Day and Night Length: The latitudinal extent causes a wide variation in the duration of day and night as one moves from south to north.

3. Size and Area

  • Total Geographical Area: Approximately 3.28 million square kilometers (32.8 lakh sq km).
  • Global Share: Accounts for about 2.4 percent of the total geographical area of the world.
  • World Rank: 7th largest country in the world.
    • Order of largest countries: Russia, Canada, USA, China, Brazil, Australia, India.

4. Boundaries and Neighbors

  • Land Boundary (स्थलीय सीमा): Approx. 15,200 km
  • Coastline (तटीय सीमा):
    • Mainland coastline: 6,100 km
    • Total coastline (including Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep): 7,516.6 km
  • India's Neighbors (पड़ोसी देश):
    • North-West: Pakistan and Afghanistan
    • North: China (Tibet), Nepal, and Bhutan
    • East: Myanmar and Bangladesh
    • South (across the sea): Sri Lanka (separated by Gulf of Mannar and Palk Strait) and Maldives.

5. India and the Standard Time

  • Standard Meridian of India (मानक यमोत्तर): 82°30'E longitude.
  • Passes through: Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh.
  • Time Calculation: It is 5 hours 30 minutes (+5:30 GMT) ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
  • Why a single standard meridian? For a country with a vast longitudinal spread (like India's 30°), a single standard time helps avoid confusion in railway timetables, radio broadcasts, and administrative tasks across states.

6. India’s Contacts with the World

  • Central Location: India occupies a strategic central position at the head of the Indian Ocean.
  • Trans-Indian Ocean Routes: Connect the countries of Europe in the West and the countries of East Asia.
  • Natural Barriers: The Himalayas in the north provide natural protection and have allowed travelers, ideas, and commodities to pass through mountain passes since ancient times.
  • Maritime Advantage: The Deccan peninsula protrudes into the Indian Ocean, helping India establish close trade and cultural contacts with West Asia, Africa, and Europe from the western coast, and Southeast and East Asia from the eastern coast.
