Chapter: Geography as a Discipline (भूगोल एक विषय के रूप में)
1. Introduction to Geography (भूगोल का परिचय)
- Definition: The term 'Geography' was first coined by Eratosthenes, a Greek scholar (276–194 BC). It is derived from two Greek words: Geo (Earth) and Graphos (description). Thus, geography means the description of the Earth.
- Core Meaning: Geography is the study of the Earth's surface as the home of human beings. It studies spatial variations, temporal changes, and the relationship between physical and human environments.
- Dualism in Geography: Geography has historically dealt with two main components:
- Physical Environment (प्राकृतिक पर्यावरण) - Landforms, climate, soil, water, vegetation.
- Human Environment (मानवीय पर्यावरण) - Society, culture, economy, settlements, infrastructure created by humans.
2. Key Approaches to the Study of Geography (अध्ययन के प्रमुख दृष्टिकोण)
Geography is studied mainly through two approaches:
-
Systematic Approach (क्रमबद्ध दृष्टिकोण):
- Propounded by: Alexander von Humboldt (German geographer).
- Concept: A phenomenon is studied globally first, and then the typology or patterns are identified (e.g., studying all types of climates across the world first, then analyzing a specific region's climate).
- Also known as: Nomothetic (law-seeking) approach.
-
Regional Approach (क्षेत्रीय दृष्टिकोण):
- Propounded by: Karl Ritter (German geographer).
- Concept: The world is divided into regions at different hierarchical levels, and all geographical phenomena in a specific region are studied together.
- Also known as: Idiographic approach.
Note: Systematic and Regional approaches are not contradictory; rather, they are complementary to each other.
3. Branches of Geography (भूगोल की शाखाएँ)
Geography is broadly divided into three main branches:
A. Physical Geography (भौतिक भूगोल)
- Geomorphology (भू-आकृति विज्ञान): Studies landforms, their evolution, and related processes.
- Climatology (जलवायु विज्ञान): Studies the structure of the atmosphere, elements of weather and climate, and climatic regions.
- Hydrology (जल विज्ञान): Studies water bodies on the surface of the Earth (oceans, rivers, lakes) and their movement.
- Soil Geography (मृदा भूगोल): Studies the processes of soil formation, soil types, fertility, and distribution.
B. Human Geography (मानव भूगोल)
- Social/Cultural Geography (सामाजिक/सांस्कृतिक भूगोल): Studies the spatial distribution of society and its cultural elements.
- Population & Settlement Geography (जनसंख्या एवं बस्ती भूगोल): Studies population growth, distribution, density, migration, and rural/urban settlements.
- Economic Geography (आर्थिक भूगोल): Studies economic activities including agriculture, industry, trade, transport, and services.
- Historical Geography (ऐतिहासिक भूगोल): Studies historical processes through which the spatial environment is shaped.
C. Biogeography (जीव भूगोल)
- An interface between Physical and Human Geography.
- Plant Geography (वनस्पति भूगोल): Spatial pattern of natural vegetation.
- Zoo Geography (प्राणि भूगोल): Spatial patterns of animals and their species.
- Ecology / Ecosystem (पारिस्थितिकी विज्ञान): Study of habitats of species and food chains.
- Environmental Geography (पर्यावरण भूगोल): Study of environmental issues, degradation, and management.
4. Physical vs. Human Geography (भौतिक बनाम मानव भूगोल)
| Feature | Physical Geography | Human Geography |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Natural elements (relief, climate, water, flora, fauna). | Human-made elements (settlements, roads, industries, culture). |
| Basis | Based on natural sciences (physics, geology, meteorology, biology). | Based on social sciences (history, economics, sociology, political science). |
| Dynamic Nature | Changes slowly over geological time scales. | Changes rapidly with human technological advancement. |
5. Why Study Geography? (भूगोल क्यों पढ़ना चाहिए?)
- To understand the Earth as the home of human life and to learn to use its resources sustainably.
- To understand physical and cultural variations across the globe.
- To develop skills in map-making, data interpretation, and using modern geospatial technologies like GIS (Geographic Information System), GPS (Global Positioning System), and Remote Sensing.
- To foster global citizenship by understanding interdependence among different regions.
6. Important Terms & Quick Recall (महत्वपूर्ण शब्द)
- Spatial Variation (क्षेत्रीय भिन्नता): Differences in geographical phenomena from one place to another on the Earth's surface.
- Dualism (द्वैवाद): The division of a subject into two contrasting viewpoints (e.g., Physical vs. Human Geography).
- Nomothetic: Law-making or universal principles (Systematic approach).
- Idiographic: Unique characteristics of a particular region (Regional approach).
