Chapter: Introduction to Statistics

1. What is Economics?

Economics is a study of how people and society choose to employ scarce resources to produce various commodities over time and distribute them for consumption among various persons and groups in society.

  • Consumer (उपभोक्ता): A person who consumes goods and services for the satisfaction of wants.
  • Producer (उत्पादक): A person who produces goods and services for the generation of income.
  • Service Holder (सेवा प्रदाता/धारक): A person who is in service and gets paid for it (e.g., working in an office).
  • Service Provider (सेवा प्रदाता): A person who provides services to others for a consideration (e.g., lawyer, doctor).

2. Meaning of Statistics (सांख्यिकी का अर्थ)

Statistics can be understood in two senses:

A. Plural Sense (बहुवचन रूप में - Numerical Data)

Statistics refers to numerical facts or data collected in a systematic manner for a specific purpose.

  • Key Features:
    1. Aggregate of facts (तथ्यों का समूह)
    2. Numerically expressed (संख्यात्मक रूप में व्यक्त)
    3. Affected by a multiplicity of causes
    4. Placed in relation to each other
    5. Pre-determined purpose (पूर्वनिर्धारित उद्देश्य)
    6. Collected in a systematic manner

B. Singular Sense (एकवचन रूप में - Statistical Methods)

Statistics refers to the statistical methods or techniques relating to collection, organization, presentation, analysis, and interpretation of data.

  • Five Stages of Statistical Study
    1. Collection of Data (आँकड़ों का संकलन)
    2. Organization of Data (आँकड़ों का संगठन)
    3. Presentation of Data (आँकड़ों का प्रस्तुतीकरण)
    4. Analysis of Data (आँकड़ों का विश्लेषण)
    5. Interpretation of Data (आँकड़ों का निर्वचन/निष्कर्ष)

3. Importance and Functions of Statistics

  • Quantitative expression of economic problems
  • Inter-sectoral and inter-temporal comparison
  • Working out cause and effect relationships
  • Construction of economic theories and models
  • Forecasting and policy formulation

4. Limitations of Statistics (सांख्यिकी की सीमाएँ)

  1. Study of numerical facts only: It does not study qualitative aspects (like honesty, poverty, beauty).
  2. Study of aggregates only: It does not study a single individual/observation.
  3. Homogeneity of data: Data must be comparable.
  4. Results are true on average: Statistical results are not universally true; they are true only under certain conditions.
  5. Can be misused: Statistics can be manipulated to suit one's own requirements.

5. Distrust of Statistics (सांख्यिकी में अविश्वास)

"Statistics are like clay of which you can make a god or a devil as you please." Statistics do not prove anything by themselves; they can be misinterpreted or misused if not handled by experts.
