Chapter: Business Services (व्या व्यवसायिक सेवाएँ)


### Concept 1: Meaning and Nature of Business Services

  • Business Services: Those services that are used by business enterprises to conduct their activities smoothly. They help in overcoming hindrances of time, place, distance, risk, and finance in commerce.
  • Nature of Services (The 5 I’s):
    1. Intangibility (अमूर्तता): Cannot be touched or seen; can only be experienced.
    2. Inconsistency (असमरूपता / भिन्नता): Services vary depending on the provider and customer.
    3. Inseparability (अपृथक्करण): Production and consumption take place simultaneously.
    4. Inventory Loss / Perishability (भण्डारण का अभाव): Cannot be stored for future use; unused service is lost forever.
    5. Involvement (ग्राहक की भागीदारी): Participation of the customer is essential at the time of service delivery.

### Concept 2: Classification of Business Services

Business services are broadly classified into five categories:

  1. Banking (बैंकिंग): Provides financial assistance and deals in money.
  2. Insurance (बीमा): Provides protection against various types of risks.
  3. Transportation (परिवहन): Facilitates physical movement of goods from place of production to consumption.
  4. Warehousing (वेयरहाउसिंग / गोदाम): Removes the hindrance of time by storing goods safely until demanded.
  5. Communication (संचार): Facilitates exchange of information between producers, consumers, and intermediaries.

### Concept 3: Banking Services (बैंकिंग सेवाएँ)

  • Commercial Bank: An institution that accepts deposits from the public and grants loans for the purpose of earning profit.

  • Types of Bank Accounts:

    1. Savings Account: For individual savings, earns nominal interest, minimum restrictions on transactions.
    2. Current Account: For businessmen, large number of transactions, no interest paid, overdraft facility available.
    3. Recurring Deposit (RD) Account: Deposited a fixed amount regularly over a specific period.
    4. Fixed Deposit (FD) Account: Lumpsum amount deposited for a fixed period; carries a higher rate of interest.
  • E-Banking Services (ई-बैंकिंग सेवाएँ):

    • ATM (Automated Teller Machine): 24x7 cash withdrawal and deposit.
    • NEFT (National Electronic Funds Transfer): Settlement takes place in batches.
    • RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement): Funds transferred immediately on a real-time basis (Minimum limit generally applies).
    • Debit Card / Credit Card: Plastic cards for cashless transactions.

### Concept 4: Insurance Services (बीमा सेवाएँ)

Insurance is a contract between the insurer and the insured where the insurer undertakes to compensate the insured for financial loss suffered due to a specific risk in consideration of a fixed amount called Premium (प्रीमियम).

Fundamental Principles of Insurance (बीमा کے प्रमुख सिद्धांत):

  1. Utmost Good Faith (पूर्ण सद् विश्वास): Both parties must disclose all material facts accurately.
  2. Insurable Interest (बीमा योग्य हित): The insured must have pecuniary (financial) interest in the subject matter of insurance.
  3. Indemnity (क्षतिपूर्ति - Applicable to Fire & Marine): The insurer compensates only for the actual loss suffered, not exceeding the sum assured. (Not applicable to Life Insurance).
  4. Contribution (अंशदान): If the same property is insured with multiple insurers, all will contribute proportionately to the loss.
  5. Subrogation (प्रत्यास्थापन): After compensation, the right of ownership of the damaged property passes to the insurer.
  6. Mitigation of Loss (हानि कम करना): The insured must take reasonable steps to minimize loss/damage to the insured property.
  7. Causa Proxima / Proximate Cause (निकटतम कारण): The nearest or direct cause is considered to determine liability.

Types of Insurance (बीमा के प्रकार):

  • Life Insurance: Insurance of human life. Can be taken as an investment or protection.
  • Fire Insurance: Protects against loss or damage by fire.
  • Marine Insurance: Protects goods and ships against perils of the sea (Hull, Cargo, Freight insurance).

### Concept 5: Communication Services (संचार सेवाएँ)

Services that help in transmitting messages and information quickly and accurately.

  • Postal Services: Provided by India Post (Mail, Registered Post, Parcel, Speed Post, Money Order, Financial services like Savings schemes).
  • Telecom Services: Cellular mobile services, fixed-line services, VSAT services, DTH services, etc., which keep businesses connected globally.

### Concept 6: Transportation & Warehousing (परिवहन तथा भण्डारण)

  • Transportation: Creates Place Utility (स्थान उपयोगिता) by moving goods from surplus regions to deficit regions. Modes include Road, Rail, Air, and Water transport.
  • Warehousing: Creates Time Utility (समय उपयोगिता) by storing goods during the period between production and consumption.
    • Types of Warehouses: Private, Public, Bonded (for imported goods before customs duty is paid), Government, and Co-operative warehouses.
