Chapter: Manufacturing Industries (निर्माण उद्योग)
1. Introduction & Importance of Manufacturing
- Manufacturing (निर्माण): Production of goods in large quantities after processing from raw materials to more valuable products.
- Importance (महत्व):
- Modernizes agriculture (कृषि का आधुनिकीकरण).
- Reduces dependence on agricultural income by providing jobs in secondary and tertiary sectors.
- Eradicates unemployment and poverty (बेरोजगारी और गरीबी उन्मूलन).
- Brings foreign exchange through exports (विदेशी मुद्रा अर्जित करना).
2. Contribution of Industry to National Economy
- Target Growth Rate: The National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) was set up with the objective of achieving 12% growth per annum in manufacturing.
- Desired Growth: In recent decades, the growth rate has been about 7% per annum.
3. Industrial Location Factors
The location of industries is influenced by the availability of:
- Raw material (कच्चा माल)
- Labour (श्रम)
- Capital (पूंजी)
- Power (विद्यุต शक्ति)
- Market (बाजार)
- Transport and communication facilities (परिवहन और संचार)
- Agglomeration Economies (पुंजकरण अर्थव्यवस्था): Many industries tend to come together to make use of the advantages offered by the urban centers known as agglomeration economies.
4. Classification of Industries
Industries are classified on various bases:
A. On the basis of Raw Materials Used:
- Agro-based (कृषि आधारित): Cotton, jute, silk, woollen textiles, sugar, and edible oil.
- Mineral-based (खनिज आधारित): Iron and steel, cement, aluminium, machine tools, petrochemicals.
B. According to their Main Role:
- Basic or Key Industries (आधारभूत उद्योग): Supply their products to manufacture other goods (e.g., Iron and steel, copper smelting).
- Consumer Industries (उपभोक्ता उद्योग): Produce goods for direct use by consumers (e.g., Sugar, toothpaste, paper, fans).
C. On the Basis of Capital Investment:
- Small Scale Industry (लघु उद्योग): Defined by the maximum investment allowed on the assets of a unit (currently up to Rs. 1 crore).
- Large Scale Industry (बृहद उद्योग): Investment higher than Rs. 1 crore.
D. On the Basis of Ownership:
- Public Sector (सार्वजनिक क्षेत्र): Owned and operated by government agencies (e.g., BHEL, SAIL).
- Private Sector (निजी क्षेत्र): Owned and operated by individuals or a group of individuals (e.g., TISCO, Bajaj Auto).
- Joint Sector (संयुक्त क्षेत्र): Jointly run by the state and individuals/group (e.g., Oil India Ltd. - OIL).
- Cooperative Sector (सहकारी क्षेत्र): Owned and operated by the producers or suppliers of raw materials, workers, or both (e.g., Sugar mills in Maharashtra, Co-op milk dairies like Amul).
E. Based on Bulk and Weight of Raw Materials and Finished Goods:
- Heavy Industries (भारी उद्योग): Iron and Steel.
- Light Industries (हल्के उद्योग): Electrical goods, toys.
5. Agro-Based Industries
- Textile Industry (वस्त्र उद्योग):
- Unique in the Indian economy because it is self-reliant and complete in the value chain (from raw material to highest value added products).
- Cotton Textiles: Traditionally centered in Maharashtra and Gujarat due to moist climate, availability of raw cotton, and market.
- Jute Textiles: India is the largest producer of raw jute and jute goods and stands at second place as an exporter after Bangladesh. Mostly located along the Hooghly river basin in West Bengal.
- Sugar Industry: India stands second as a world producer of sugar but occupies first place in the production of gur and khandsari. Mills are shifting towards southern and western states (like Maharashtra) because the cane produced here has a higher sucrose content.
6. Mineral-Based Industries
- Iron and Steel Industry (लोहा और इस्पात उद्योग):
- Considered the basic industry because all other industries depend on it for their machinery.
- Chota Nagpur plateau region has the maximum concentration of iron and steel industries.
- Aluminium Smelting (एल्युमिनियम प्रगालन):
- Light, corrosion-resistant, a good conductor of heat, malleable.
- Used to manufacture aircraft, utensils, and wires.
- Chemical Industries (रासायनिक उद्योग):
- Comprises organic and inorganic sectors. Inorganic chemicals include sulphuric acid, nitric acid, alkalies, etc. Organic chemicals include petrochemicals.
- Fertilizer Industry (उर्वरक उद्योग):
- Centered around the production of nitrogenous fertilizers (mainly urea), phosphatic fertilizers, and ammonium phosphate. Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, UP, Punjab, and Kerala are leading producers.
- Cement Industry (सीमेंट उद्योग):
- Essential for construction activity such as houses, factories, bridges, roads. Requires bulky and heavy raw materials like limestone, silica, and gypsum.
- Automobile Industry (ऑटोमोबाइल उद्योग):
- Provides vehicles for quick transport of goods and passengers. Trucks, buses, cars, motorcycles, etc., are manufactured in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Hyderabad, etc.
- Information Technology and Electronics Industry (सूचना प्रौद्योगिकी और इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स उद्योग):
- Bangalore is known as the electronic capital of India. Other major hubs include Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, and Noida.
7. Industrial Pollution and Environmental Degradation
Industries cause four types of pollution:
- Air Pollution (वायु प्रदूषण): Caused by the release of undesirable gases like sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide, and airborne particulate materials.
- Water Pollution (जल प्रदूषण): Caused by organic and inorganic industrial wastes discharged into rivers (e.g., Dyes, soaps, pesticides, fertilizers, heavy metals like lead and mercury).
- Thermal Pollution (तापीय प्रदूषण): Occurs when hot water from factories and thermal plants is drained into rivers and ponds before cooling.
- Noise Pollution (ध्वनि प्रदूषण): Caused by industrial and construction machinery, factory sirens, generators, etc., causing hearing impairment and stress.
8. Control of Environmental Degradation
Measures to control industrial pollution:
- Water Treatment:
- Minimizing use of water through reusing and recycling (re-cycling in two or more successive stages).
- Harvesting of rainwater to meet water requirements.
- Treating hot water and effluents before releasing them in rivers in three phases:
- Primary treatment (by mechanical means like screening, grinding, flocculation and sedimentation).
- Secondary treatment (by biological process).
- Tertiary treatment (by biological, chemical, and physical processes).
- Air Pollution Control:
- Smoke stacks fitted to factories with electrostatic precipitators, fabric filters, scrubbers.
- Use of oil or gas instead of coal in factories.
- Noise Pollution Control:
- Fitting silencers to generators and machinery.
- Redesigning machinery to operate with lesser noise.
- Using noise-absorbing materials and wearing earplugs.
- NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation): A major power corporation in India that has a proactive approach for preserving the natural environment (establishing green belts, ash pond management, ecological monitoring).
