Quick Revision Notes & Formula Sheet

Class: 10th
Subject: Hindi (Course A) - Kshitij (Kavya Khand)
Chapter: Kanyadaan (कanyadaan)
Poet: Rituraj (ऋतुराज)

### 1. Chapter Overview & Theme (पाठ का परिचय और केंद्रीय भाव)

  • Poet: Rituraj (ऋतुराज)
  • Theme: In the poem Kanyadaan, the poet depicts the emotional state of a mother at the time of her daughter's marriage. Unlike traditional depictions where a mother gives only conventional advice, here the mother gives realistic, life-aware, and empowering advice to her daughter.
  • Core Message: A woman should not accept weakness or oppression as her destiny. She should be gentle and nurturing (symbolized by fire for cooking), but at the same time, she must possess strength and self-respect to resist exploitation and cruelty (symbolized by fire as a destroyer of injustice).

### 2. Key Terms & Meanings (शब्दार्थ)

  • Kanyadaan (कन्यादान): The ritual of giving away a daughter in marriage by her parents.
  • Prathikta (प्रामाणिकता): Authenticity / Realness (यथार्थता).
  • Bodh (बोध): Understanding / Awareness.
  • Lajjabharan (लज्जाभूषण): Modesty or shyness considered as an ornament for women.
  • Vastra (वस्त्र) & Aabharana (आभूषण): Clothes and ornaments (symbolizing worldly illusions and social expectations).
  • Bholi (भोली): Innocent / Naïve.
  • Dukh (दुख): Pain / Sorrow.

### 3. Stanza-wise Summary & Concepts (पद्यांशों के मुख्य बिंदु)

Concept 1: The Mother's Perception of Grief

  • Context: “कितना प्रमाणिक था उसका दुख... लड़की को दान करते वक्त...”
  • Key Idea: The mother's grief was completely authentic and real because the daughter was her life's only companionship and asset. Giving her away felt like losing the final piece of her own identity and heart.

Concept 2: The Danger of Illusion and Naivety

  • Context: “लड़की अभी सानी नहीं थी... उसे सुख का आभास होता था...”
  • Key Idea: The daughter is still young, innocent, and lacks worldly experience. She only knows the romanticized, happy side of life and is unaware of the harsh realities, domestic violence, and suppression that women often face in marital homes.

Concept 3: The Unique and Empowering Advice

  • Context: “माँ ने कहा पानी में झाँककर... आग जैसी रोटियां सेकने के लिए है...”
  • Key Idea: The mother gives three crucial pieces of advice to her daughter:
    1. Do not be vain: Look at your face in the mirror/water and do not get lost in your physical beauty (vain pride).
    2. Understand the dual nature of fire: Fire is meant for cooking nourishing meals (Roti), but it also has the power to burn and destroy. Use it for sustenance, but never let it consume you (warning against dowry deaths/torture).
    3. Abandon traditional weakness: Do not let traditional shyness (Lajja) become your weakness or ornament of slavery.

### 4. Important Questions for MP Board Exams (महत्वपूर्ण बिंदु)

  • Q. What is the social message given in the poem?
    • Answer: The poem breaks away from patriarchal stereotypes. It teaches that women should not be submissive or accept oppression silently. They must be aware of their rights and possess inner strength.
  • Q. Why does the poet say that the girl was not yet mature/wise?
    • Answer: Because she only understood the pleasant aspects of life and was completely unaware of the deceit, exploitation, and pain prevalent in the external/marital world.
  • Q. Explain the symbolism of 'Fire' (आग) in the poem.
    • Answer: Fire represents utility (cooking food to sustain life) as well as destruction (burning cruelty/oppression). The mother warns her daughter to utilize fire for life's necessities, but to be strong enough so that she does not fall victim to its destructive side (domestic violence).
