Reverberation is the persistence of sound in a big hall due to repeated or multiple reflections from the walls, ceiling, and floor even after the sound source has stopped. Excessive reverberation causes sound to overlap, making speech unintelligible and confused. To reduce reverberation in auditoriums, the roofs and walls are usually covered with sound-absorbent materials like compressed fiberboards, rough plaster, or heavy draperies. Additionally, seats are chosen based on their sound-absorbing properties.
