Sound is a form of energy that produces the sensation of hearing in our ears. It is produced by vibrating objects. When an object vibrates, it sets the particles of the surrounding medium into vibration. These vibrating particles transfer their energy to adjacent particles, propagating sound through the medium as mechanical waves. Examples of sound-producing vibrating bodies include a stretched rubber band when plucked and the vibrating membranes of a stretched drum (tabla) when struck.
