Sound waves are mechanical waves that require a material medium (solid, liquid, or gas) containing vibrating particles to propagate from one point to another. The Moon and outer space consist of a vacuum where there are no air molecules or matter present to transmit vibrations. Since sound cannot propagate through a vacuum, sound from explosions on the Moon cannot reach the Earth.
