Two fundamental differences between physical and chemical changes are: 1. In a physical change, no new substance is formed, and the chemical composition of the matter remains unaltered (e.g., melting of ice). In a chemical change, one or more entirely new substances with different properties are formed (e.g., rusting of iron). 2. Physical changes are usually temporary and easily reversible, whereas chemical changes are generally permanent and irreversible by simple physical methods.
