Hybridization refers to the process of crossing between genetically dissimilar plants to obtain a new plant variety with desirable characteristics such as higher yield and disease resistance. Based on the relationship between the plants being crossed, hybridization is divided into three main types: intervarietal hybridization (crossing between different varieties of the same species), interspecific hybridization (crossing between two different species of the same genus), and intergeneric hybridization (crossing between different genera of the same family).
