Hofmann bromamide degradation reaction is a well-known chemical method used for the preparation of primary amines by treating an unsubstituted primary amide with bromine and an aqueous or ethanolic solution of sodium hydroxide. In this reaction, the carbonyl carbon atom of the amide is eliminated as a carbonate molecule, resulting in the formation of a primary amine containing one carbon atom less than the parent amide. This reaction is particularly useful for descending carbon chain series.
