Introduction to Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART)\nInfertility is the inability to produce children despite unprotected sexual cohabitation. In recent years, specialized techniques known as Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) have been developed to help infertile couples.

1. In Vitro Fertilization and Embryo Transfer (IVF-ET)

• Concept: Commonly known as the test-tube baby program. Ova from the wife/donor and sperm from the husband/donor are collected and induced to form zygotes under simulated laboratory conditions.
• Process: The zygote or early embryos (with up to 8 blastomeres) could then be transferred into the fallopian tube (ZIFT), or embryos with more than 8 blastomeres are transferred into the uterus (IUT - Intra Uterine Transfer) to complete further development.

2. Zygote Intra-Fallopian Transfer (ZIFT)

• Concept: ZIFT is a specialized variation of IVF where the fertilization takes place outside the body in a laboratory setting.
• Process: However, instead of placing the embryo directly into the uterus, the zygote or early embryo (up to 8 blastomeres stage) is transferred directly into the fallopian tube using laparoscopic techniques. This allows the embryo to naturally travel down to the uterus for implantation.

3. Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

• Concept: ICSI is an advanced laboratory procedure designed to treat severe cases of male factor infertility, such as very low sperm count or poor sperm motility.
• Process: In this method, a single living sperm is injected directly into the cytoplasm of a mature oocyte under a high-power microscope. Once fertilization is confirmed and the zygote forms, the resulting embryo is transferred into the female reproductive tract for successful gestation.
