Addiction is a psychological attachment to certain effects—such as euphoria and a temporary feeling of well-being—associated with drugs and alcohol, driving individuals to consume them repeatedly even when their use is self-destructive. Dependence is the manifestation of an unpleasant and physical withdrawal syndrome if the regular dose of drugs or alcohol is abruptly discontinued. Symptoms of dependence include anxiety, shakiness, nausea, and profuse sweating, which are relieved only when drug use is resumed, forcing the user to continue usage to avoid discomfort.
