Homologous organs are those structures in different organisms that share a common anatomical origin and basic structural plan, but perform different functions due to adaptations to different environments. This phenomenon represents divergent evolution. For example, the forelimbs of humans, cheetahs, whales, and bats share similar skeletal structures including humerus, radius, ulna, carpals, and metacarpals, but serve different functions such as grasping, running, swimming, and flying, respectively. \nIn contrast, analogous organs are structures in different organisms that perform similar functions but have entirely different anatomical structures and evolutionary origins. This represents convergent evolution. Examples include the wings of butterflies (insects) and birds, or the flippers of penguins and dolphins. Homologous organs demonstrate common ancestry and evolutionary divergence, whereas analogous organs show adaptation of unrelated species to similar ecological niches and selective pressures.
