Introduction to German Unification

In the 1840s, nationalist feelings were widespread among middle-class Germans, who had tried to unite the different regions of the German confederation into a nation-state governed by an elected parliament in 1848. However, this liberal initiative was suppressed by the combined forces of the monarchy and the military, supported by large landowners (Junkers).

Role of Otto von Bismarck

• Chief Architect: Prussia took on the leadership of the movement for national unification. Its chief minister, Otto von Bismarck, became the architect of this process.
• Policy of 'Blood and Iron': Bismarck carried out this process with the help of the Prussian army and bureaucracy, utilizing a ruthless policy known as 'Blood and Iron' to achieve German unification.
• Prussian Leadership: Bismarck realized that unification could not be achieved through parliamentary debates and majoritarian resolutions, but rather through systematic military campaigns.

Key Stages of German Unification

• War with Denmark (1864): Prussia, in alliance with Austria, fought against Denmark and secured control over Schleswig, boosting Prussian military prestige.
• Austro-Prussian War / Seven Weeks' War (1866): Prussia defeated Austria in 1866, effectively ending Austrian influence over German states and leading to the formation of the North German Confederation.
• Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871): In the final stage, Prussia fought a successful war against France. Southern German states were drawn into the conflict and ultimately integrated into the German fold.
• Proclamation of the German Empire: In January 1871, an assembly comprising princes of German states, representatives of the army, and Bismarck gathered at the Palace of Versailles to proclaim the new German Empire headed by Kaiser William I.
