CFCs stand for chlorofluorocarbons, which are synthetic chemical compounds used widely in refrigerators, air conditioners, and aerosol sprays. When released into the atmosphere, these compounds rise up to the stratosphere where ultraviolet rays break them down to release active chlorine atoms. These chlorine atoms act as catalysts and continuously destroy ozone molecules, leading to the thinning and depletion of the ozone layer.
