Green plants are called producers because they have the unique ability to capture solar energy and manufacture their own food through the process of photosynthesis using simple inorganic substances like carbon dioxide and water. Since all other organisms, directly or indirectly, depend on these plants for their nutritional requirements and sustenance, they are appropriately termed the producers of the ecosystem.
