Resistivity, also commonly referred to as specific electrical resistance, is defined as the electrical resistance offered by a cube of a substance of unit length and unit cross-sectional area when current flows perpendicular to opposite faces. It is an intrinsic property characteristic of the material itself and does not depend on the physical dimensions of the conductor. The standard SI unit for measuring electrical resistivity is the ohm-meter. Metals generally possess very low resistivity, making them excellent conductors, whereas insulating materials and non-metals possess extremely high resistivity values, preventing current flow completely.
