The poet advises against touching the 'shadows' because dwelling on past happy memories when one is going through a difficult phase in the present only increases mental agony. Instead of providing comfort, these memories make the present pain feel much more intense and double our sorrow. By avoiding these shadows, a person can focus on the reality of the present and work towards a better future instead of wasting energy on what is lost.
