Natalya Stepanovna is a twenty-five-year-old unmarried woman who lives with her father, Stepan Chubukov. She is an educated, efficient housekeeper and an attractive woman, but she is also exceptionally quarrelsome, obstinate, and possessive. She loves to argue and cannot tolerate any challenge to her family's prestige or property, as demonstrated during the furious disputes over Oxen Meadows and her dog, Squeezer. However, she is also desperate to get married. The moment she learns from her father that Lomov had actually come to propose marriage to her, her attitude shifts dramatically. She breaks down into hysterical crying and demands that her father bring Lomov back immediately. Despite her eagerness to marry, her argumentative nature resumes as soon as Lomov returns.
