Chubukov and Natalya panic, believing Lomov has died, which leads Chubukov to dramatically mourn his own ill fate. However, when Lomov slowly regains consciousness, Chubukov hastily intervenes to secure the proposal before another fight starts. He forces Natalya's hand into Lomov's, demands that they kiss each other, and gives his paternal blessing for their marriage. Hilariously, immediately after accepting the proposal and kissing, Natalya and Lomov resume their aggressive quarrel about their dogs.
