The people of Coorg, also known as Kodavus, are believed to be of Greek or Arabic descent, which makes them distinct from the mainstream Indian population. According to the Greek theory, a part of Alexander’s army moved south along the coast and settled there when return became impractical. These people married amongst the locals, and their culture is apparent in their martial traditions, marriage, and religious rites, which are different from the Hindu mainstream. The second theory points to their Arabic origins because of the 'kuppia', a long black coat with an embroidered waist belt worn by the Kodavus. This garment closely resembles the 'kuffia' worn by the Arabs and the Kurds. This unique heritage contributes to their reputation for bravery and hospitality. The Coorg Regiment is one of the most decorated in the Indian Army, and the first Chief of the Indian Army, General Cariappa, was a Coorgi, further highlighting the community's martial spirit and historical significance.
