Contour ploughing is a soil conservation technique where ploughing is done along the natural contour lines of a sloped land rather than up and down the slope. By creating ridges and furrows along the contour lines, this method slows down the flow of water down the slopes during heavy rainfall. As a result, water runoff is significantly reduced, preventing topsoil erosion and allowing more water to infiltrate into the ground, thereby preserving soil fertility in hilly and mountainous regions.
