The iron and steel industry is universally considered the basic or key industry of any country because all other industries—whether heavy, medium, or light—depend on it for their machinery, tools, and infrastructural requirements. Without the iron and steel industry, no modern industrial development can take place. \nFirstly, steel is required to manufacture a vast range of engineering goods, construction materials, defense equipment, medical instruments, and consumer goods. Every machine used in factories, textiles, mining, and agriculture is made directly or indirectly from steel. \nSecondly, it is a heavy industry because all its raw materials (such as iron ore, coking coal, and limestone) as well as finished products are heavy and bulky, entailing heavy transportation costs. Iron and steel serve as the foundation of national economic strength, industrial growth, and technological advancement. A country's level of economic development is often measured by the quantity of steel it produces and consumes. Therefore, without a robust iron and steel sector, a nation cannot achieve self-reliance in manufacturing or infrastructural development.
