While democracies are expected to ensure a fair distribution of wealth and resources, the actual performance of democratic regimes in reducing poverty and inequality often presents a complex picture.

1. Economic Growth and Inequality

• Disparity in Wealth Distribution: In actual democracies, a small proportion of ultra-rich people enjoy a highly disproportionate share of wealth and incomes. Not only that, their share in the total income of the country has been increasing.
• Neglect of the Poor: Those who stand at the bottom of the society have very little to depend upon. Their incomes have been declining, and sometimes it becomes difficult for them to meet their basic needs of life such as food, clothing, housing, education, and health.

2. Democracy and Poverty Reduction

• Role of the Electorate: Although voters in many democracies depend heavily on the poor for winning elections, democratic governments do not appear to be as keen to address the question of poverty as one would expect them to.
• Situations in Developing Nations: In countries like India, a vast population is still dependent on agriculture, and poverty remains a massive challenge. While poverty alleviation programs exist, their implementation is often plagued by corruption and inefficiencies.

3. Equality in Political vs. Economic Sphere

• Political Equality: In the political sphere, all citizens have equal weight in electing representatives (one person, one vote, one value).
• Economic Inequality: In contrast, the economic sphere shows a growing distance between the rich and the poor. A handful of wealthy individuals wield enormous economic power, which sometimes translates into undue political influence.
