Domestic electric circuits carry electricity to various appliances, but faults can lead to severe hazards. Overloading: Overloading happens when too many high-power electrical appliances (such as a heater, refrigerator, and AC) are connected to a single socket or when the overall current drawn exceeds the safe limit of the circuit wires. This causes excessive heating, which can melt insulation and cause electrical fires. Short-circuiting: Short-circuiting occurs when the live wire and neutral wire come into direct contact due to damaged insulation or a fault in an appliance, leading to a sudden surge of very high current and sparking. Function of a Fuse: An electric fuse is a critical safety device designed to protect circuits and appliances. It consists of a thin wire made of a material with a low melting point (such as a lead-tin alloy). When a short-circuit or overloading causes the current to exceed the safe limit, the fuse wire heats up rapidly, melts, and breaks the circuit. This instantly cuts off the electricity supply, preventing damage to costly appliances and averting major electrical fires.
