Electromagnetic induction is the process by which a changing magnetic field in a closed circuit induces an electric current in that circuit. This groundbreaking phenomenon was discovered by Michael Faraday and Joseph Henry independently. Ways to induce current: 1. Moving a magnet towards or away from a coil: When a bar magnet is pushed into or pulled away from a closed coil of wire, the magnetic flux linked with the coil changes, which induces an electric current registered by the galvanometer. 2. Moving a coil in a magnetic field: If a coil is moved rapidly inside a stationary magnetic field, a current is induced due to relative motion. 3. Changing current in a nearby coil (Mutual Induction): If two coils are placed close to each other and the current in the first coil is changed (switched on or off), the magnetic field associated with it changes, inducing a current in the second coil. This principle forms the backbone of electric generators and transformers.
