CBSE · Class 10 · English · First Flight: The ProposalGive a brief character sketch of Ivan Vassilevitch Lomov based on the play 'The Proposal'.
Ivan Vassilevitch Lomov is a thirty-five-year-old wealthy landowner who is anxious to get married because he feels he has reached a critical age and needs a quiet, well-regulated life. He is a highly neurotic, suspicious, and hypochondriac individual who constantly complains of physical ailments, such as palpitations, twitching, numb feet, and a weak heart. Although he comes to Chubukov's house with the genuine intention of proposing to Natalya, his contentious and argumentative nature prevents him from achieving his goal smoothly. He gets easily flustered and drawn into foolish quarrels over minor matters like land boundaries and hunting dogs. His inability to control his temper and keep his main objective in focus reveals his foolishness, rigidity, and emotional instability.
